Today we were able to look at the theme of social networking through an app which has become very popular in education over the last years called Edmodo. The power of this app is that it is web-based and also available on tablets and phones – which also addresses the other theme of today – Mobile Teaching and Learning!
Ron gave a nice demonstration of some of the key features and has had the opportunity to see teachers use it in his school setting. While we were exploring the app, I realized that Edmodo is in actuality a powerful learning management system [LMS] quite similar to the more traditional virtual learning environments [VLEs]- e.g. Moodle & Blackboard – except that it’s design is based on the social networking principle and in addition, makes it really easy for the teacher to pull in apps into the environment to reinforce & support lessons across a variety of content areas.
This tool is also clearly designed for K-12 settings. As we got a review of the highlights, it was easy to see why teachers are really liking this tool. I am definitely interested in trying this out in a future course – maybe LCIII?
